According to the ancient Chinese philosophy of feng shui, thoughtful bed placement can improve the quality of your sleep and spark romance in your life. In feng shui, the bed is considered the most influential piece of furniture in the home, impacting both your rest and daily energy.
Making minor adjustments to your bed's placement, like altering its direction, can enhance sleep quality and infuse your life with harmony and tranquility.
Find the Commanding Position
In feng shui, the bed's "commanding position" is crucial. It allows you to see the door from your bed, enhancing security and awareness. Avoid direct alignment with the door, as it may disrupt energy flow. Instead, place the bed diagonally to the door for optimal bedroom feng shui.
If placing your bed diagonally to the door is tough, positioning a mirror to reflect the door from your bed can help you achieve the commanding position in feng shui.
Place Your Bed Away From Opening Doors
When arranging your bed, keep it away from opening doors. Ensure doors don't open directly toward the bed's center, as this hinders achieving a commanding position in feng shui. Also, avoid having your feet point straight at the bedroom door while sleeping, as this is termed the 'coffin position' and is believed to attract negative energy.
In feng shui, if the door directly faces the bed, it's considered bad for one's fortune and health. To fix this, you can hang a string of Five Emperor Coins between the door and the bed. Alternatively, placing a small crystal ball in that space can also dispel negative energy, known as "chi" in feng shui, and bring harmony to the room.
Put the Headboard Against a Solid Wall
In feng shui, it's ideal to position the head of your bed against a solid wall for a sense of stability and security. Avoid placing the headboard or the head of your bed near windows or directly beneath them to maintain balanced energy.
If your bed must be placed against or beneath a window, ensure the window is secure and hang heavy curtains to block negative chi.
Locate the Bed Away From Same Wall as a Toilet
Avoid placing the headboard on the same wall as the toilet to prevent hearing or smelling from the bathroom.
If you must share a wall with a toilet, hang a Lotus and Goldfish Purifying Sticker on the wall behind your bed as a feng shui solution. It can purify the air and disperse negative energy from the toilet.
Provide Space on Both Sides of the Bed
Keep at least 30 cm of space around both sides of the bed if possible to allow for smooth energy flow in the room. Placing one side of your bed against a wall is not ideal as it disrupts the balance of yin and yang energies. Having space on both sides is also practical, as it allows you to move freely around the bed.
If one side of the bed must be against a wall, leave a small gap of space. Adding a mirror on the wall above the side of the bed can help visually expand the bedroom. For children's beds, placing them against the wall is acceptable as it provides a sense of support.
Avoid Sleeping Under Beams, Soffits, and Sloped Ceilings
As a general feng shui practice, it is recommended to avoid placing your bed directly beneath beams, soffits, or sloped ceilings. These architectural features are believed to create a sense of pressure or unease, which can disrupt the flow of energy (chi) and lead to feelings of oppression or discomfort in the sleeping area. Instead, aiming for a clear and open space above the bed helps foster a calmer and more harmonious environment.
If it's unavoidable, correct the situation by hiding the ceiling's architectural features with draped fabric. Painting the ceiling in one color, shown in the image above, helps blend problematic architectural features.
